Bendigo's Sporting Scene Keeps Leveling Upwards

Sport is a big part of life in Bendigo, and over the past few years the city has really grown into one of regional Victoria’s main sporting hubs. From elite basketball and national cycling events through to AFL, cricket, netball and strong community sport, Bendigo regularly pulls in thousands of visitors who stay locally, eat out, shop and make a weekend of it.

One of the standout venues is Red Energy Arena Bendigo (formerly Bendigo Stadium). It’s home to the Bendigo Spirit, Bendigo Braves and major netball competitions, and also hosts national tournaments and championships throughout the year. The arena is currently getting a major upgrade, including:

  • Two new indoor courts
  • Refurbishment of existing courts
  • Upgraded outdoor netball lighting
  • Accessibility improvements
  • Solar upgrades and expanded parking

The idea is simple — make the venue bigger and better so Bendigo can attract even more major events, not just now but well into the future. Works are expected to run through to late 2026. For more details visit: Redevelopment Highlights

Other key sporting spots around the city include:

  • Queen Elizabeth Oval — AFL, cricket and big community events
  • Tom Flood Sports Centre — athletics and cycling, with ongoing upgrades
  • Lar Birpa Athletics Complex — a key regional athletics hub
  • Harry Trott Oval — a well-used local cricket ground
  • Bendigo Sports Centre at La Trobe University — supporting both uni and community sport

Bendigo’s sporting culture is very community-driven. Basketball and netball are especially strong, and the region has a great reputation for developing talent and supporting women’s sport. Bendigo Spirit games in particular have become real highlight events, bringing in fans from across Victoria.

On top of that, there’s plenty happening at grassroots level too, with ongoing investment into local facilities like the Golden Square Recreation Reserve pavilion upgrades — improving changerooms, spectator areas and overall usability for clubs and the community.

The Victorian Government has also recognised Bendigo as a key regional sport destination through the Regional Sports Infrastructure Program, highlighting how upgraded facilities help attract events, support local jobs and bring more visitors into the city.

Sport tourism is becoming a real win for Bendigo. Big tournaments and competitions often fill accommodation for weekends at a time, especially during quieter travel periods, and give a boost to local cafes, pubs and businesses.

Around game days, visitors often head to spots like:

All up, Bendigo is quietly building a strong reputation as a regional sports and events destination — with better facilities, bigger events, and plenty happening both on and off the field.
